Porcu Opens at Monza with a Firm Hand
Simone Porcu led almost throughout the Championship opener at Monza, briefly conceding the advantage to Florian Masse before returning to the front and winning by 3.929 seconds.
The opening command
The first race of the six-round Championship gave Monza a winner of unmistakable authority. Simone Porcu took the Formula RSS 1979 V8 to victory after 37 laps, having headed 36 of them, and set the fastest lap as an additional mark of his command. Yet it was not an untroubled procession. Florian Masse remained sufficiently close to take the lead on lap 19, a brief but important interruption to Porcu's control. The Italian reclaimed the place on the following lap and thereafter kept the Frenchman behind him to the flag. Masse's own fastest lap was only 0.132 seconds slower than Porcu's, evidence that the winner's margin was earned against a properly competitive pursuer rather than a distant second place.
Masse keeps the issue alive
Masse came home second, 3.929 seconds behind Porcu, with Eduardo Beninca completing the podium. The leading pair had provided the race's central contest, although Porcu's return to the front after lap 19 proved decisive. There was no need for excess movement from the leader thereafter. His was the stronger rhythm over the full distance, and the result was a deserved first victory of the campaign.
Beninca's third place gave the podium a settled appearance, but behind it the order had rather more fluidity. gilvil77, having fallen as low as tenth by lap 17, worked back through the field to take fourth. It was a recovery of six places from that low point and brought him clear of pitman in fifth.
A private contest in the lower top ten
The closest sustained argument of the latter stages belonged to pitman and Eetu Karjunen. From lap 23 to the end they were repeatedly within two seconds of one another, exchanging the advantage at the end of laps 23 and 24 before pitman established himself ahead. Their contest became part of a changing group which also included Rolf Biber as the race entered its final phase.
Biber reached the flag sixth, one place ahead of Karjunen, and their own order changed on the final lap. Karjunen had earlier lost three positions following an incident on lap two, but he recovered sufficiently to join the fight around the edge of the top six. It was a hard little battle, conducted away from the podium but fully in keeping with the restless character of the 37-lap race.
An opening result of consequence
Porcu's win, fastest lap and long occupation of the lead make a substantial opening statement. Masse had shown enough speed to ensure that the new season will not be settled by assumption, while Beninca left Monza with a sound third place and gilvil77 with the reward for his determined recovery.
For the immediate record, Porcu leaves Monza as a Championship leader after the opening round. With five races still to come, the result is an early advantage in prestige as much as anything else, but it is one that the others will have noted.
Monza offered no single dramatic reversal, only the more persuasive spectacle of Porcu absorbing the one serious change in the order and restoring his authority at once. In an opening race, that sort of composure can carry a longer echo than the margin itself.
