Masse Takes the Memorial Honours
Florian Masse won the non-scoring Prologue in the Gilvil77 Memorial Race at Mosport after a race of shifting close company, taking the lead from FMG in the latter part and holding it to the flag by 3.358 seconds. Romain Pichon completed a French one-three in the Brabham field.
A race held in remembrance
This was not a Championship round, but a familiarisation race set apart for a more personal purpose. The Gilvil77 Memorial Race was held in memory of Francesco "GILVIL77", a THR driver since 2020 whose white racing cars, fairness and speed had made him a familiar figure in the community. His F1 1975 Championship success in 2022, achieved in a Brabham, gave an added resonance to a 24-car field in which every entrant took the same car (Gilvil´s car).
The occasion demanded dignity rather than spectacle for its own sake. Yet the 48 laps developed into a properly contested race, its front runners seldom allowed the comfort of isolation. Masse emerged with the winner's laurels, but only after the leading order had remained in motion for much of the afternoon.
Five cars in close order
From lap 6 through lap 20, Masse, Pichon, Alex Senna, Willphaizer and David Czemmel formed a compact leading group, all five covered by less than five seconds. It was a race in which position carried a certain fragility: a driver could be prominent one lap and find the picture altered at the next.
Within that group, Masse and Pichon supplied the most persistent early argument. They ran within two seconds of one another for a long uninterrupted stretch which extended from the opening laps well beyond half-distance. Pichon moved ahead of Masse by lap 15, following an incident at The Esses on that lap which cost Masse one position. The advantage was short-lived. By lap 19 Masse had reclaimed the place, and their contest continued to shape the front of the race until the order began to settle later on.
Czemmel and Senna also shared close quarters through the middle phase. Senna held the advantage by lap 11, but Czemmel had moved ahead by lap 21, when Senna lost a place after an incident at Quebec Corner. Their eventual fourth and fifth places reflected a contest conducted close behind the principal trio.
Masse finds the lead
FMG had been the other decisive figure. The British driver set the fastest lap of the race in 1:14.874, only 0.013 seconds quicker than Masse's best, and his pace kept the eventual winner under constant obligation. There was no easy interval in which Masse could simply preserve what he had gained.
The decisive change came at the completion of lap 32, when Masse moved ahead of FMG. From there the Frenchman converted a hard-won advantage into victory, completing all 48 laps and taking the flag 3.358 seconds clear. FMG likewise completed the full distance in second place, his quickest lap and sustained speed marking him as Masse's principal adversary in the final reckoning.
Pichon came home third, 1.431 seconds behind FMG. Thus the podium was decided by a relatively small separation at its lower step as well as by the later duel for victory, with the three leading Brabhams giving the memorial race a worthy competitive centre.
Other contests endured
Behind the podium, the race retained its arguments. Valentin Knechtel and Davide Ricciardi exchanged places repeatedly after their early close running. Ricciardi had moved ahead by lap 4 after Knechtel lost two places during an incident at The Esses, but Knechtel regained the advantage by lap 17. Ricciardi was back in front by lap 28, only for Knechtel to recover seventh place by the end, with Ricciardi eighth.
Fabien Lauzet and Nat Stevenson, too, remained closely matched across much of the 48 laps. Stevenson had the better of their order by lap 17, while Lauzet moved ahead in the later stages and came home ninth, Stevenson tenth. Further forward, meisterJaeger recovered from tenth after lap 6 to finish sixth, ahead of Knechtel and Ricciardi.
Willphaizer's presence in the early five-car leading group was one of the race's changing features, but an incident at Quebec Corner on lap 33 dropped him two places. He was ultimately classified 23rd after completing 33 laps.
Masse's name will stand first in the record, with FMG and Pichon alongside him on the podium. But the significance of the evening lay beyond a non-scoring result. In gathering former and present competitors around the Brabham machinery so closely associated with Francesco, THR marked a shared absence with the serious racing he would have recognised.
