The lead passes on lap four

Silverstone produced a race of two distinct pressures: pitman at the front, controlling the long afternoon with a calm authority, and a tightly drawn contest immediately behind him which repeatedly changed its complexion. The German's McLaren was credited as leader for 43 of the 46 laps, but the result was not the consequence of an untroubled procession. Simone Porcu's Williams remained close enough in the closing phase to ensure that the advantage required careful preservation.

Florian Masse, the Championship leader and winner of the preceding round, set the early order before his McLaren fell from the race after only three laps. pitman took over at the completion of lap four and did not relinquish the place. From there he built a useful, though never extravagant, command at the head of the field. It was the sort of drive Silverstone rewards: steady, accurate and sufficiently quick to prevent the pursuing Williams from settling into any easy rhythm.

Porcu keeps the McLaren honest

Simone Porcu had begun the day only three points behind Masse in the Championship and emerged from the first phase of the race as pitman's principal opponent. The Italian's Williams remained within two seconds of the leader on eight occasions during the last fifth of the distance. There was no question of pitman being allowed merely to husband an early margin; Porcu's presence stayed material until the conclusion.

The official margin was 2.588 seconds, close enough to give proper weight to the pursuit without disguising the fact that pitman had led almost from the outset. It was a first Championship success for pitman, earned not by a brief attack or a fortunate late shuffle, but by maintaining the lead after Masse's early departure and carrying it through 46 laps.

That achievement also gave the Championship its first substantial correction since the opening rounds. pitman had started 12 points behind Masse and is now nine behind. Masse nevertheless retains first place on 117 points, with Simone Porcu second on 114 and pitman third on 108. The gap between the leading two is unchanged, but the winner has brought himself more firmly into their company with two rounds remaining.

Three cars for two remaining podium places

Behind the McLaren, the race was shaped for much of its length by Simone Porcu, his brother Elia, and Ali Rıza Tuncel in the Lotus 72E. From laps 16 to 44 the three were repeatedly gathered within five seconds, their contest providing the movement that the settled leadership otherwise denied the race.

Tuncel and Elia Porcu had been closely matched from the early stages. Tuncel moved ahead before the race had properly found its order, Elia reclaimed the place before half-distance, and the Lotus was again in front by lap 30. Simone Porcu, too, moved around the same group at selected points, so that the question of second and third never possessed a permanent answer.

Tuncel's pace was beyond dispute. His 1:17.893 was the fastest lap of the race, only 0.013 seconds better than Simone Porcu's best. Yet the Lotus driver's afternoon turned sharply on lap 45, when an incident dropped him from second to fourth. It was a costly change at precisely the point when the podium had appeared to be within his grasp.

The Porcu brothers profited. Simone held second, while Elia took third in the other Williams, 1.738 seconds behind him. For Elia, the result was a composed conclusion to a long contest with Tuncel; for Simone, it was an important second place in a Championship table where every point now carries a more exact weight.

A race with room for recovery

Further back, Kasperi Sirén brought the Surtees home sixth after losing one place amid an incident on lap two. gilvil77's Tyrrell P34 followed in seventh, with Mika Hakala eighth in the Ferrari 312T. Those positions mattered chiefly as evidence of how deeply the field was contested around the points, but the main narrative had already been decided at the front.

The most telling lower-order contrast was Masse's. His early retirement leaves the Championship leader with no return from Silverstone, while each of his nearest pursuers has turned the afternoon to account. For pitman, especially, the first win has arrived at an opportune moment: it establishes a different tone for the final two races and ensures that the leaders will look over their shoulders as well as ahead.
