A race turned at the front

Jarama's third Championship race brought Simone Porcu the victory that altered the shape of the table. In the common Formula RSS 1979 V8 machinery, the Italian was drawn into a close early argument with gilvil77, the pair seldom allowing one another much latitude through the opening part of the 44-lap race.

For nine successive laps from the second onwards they ran within two seconds of one another, gilvil77 setting the early pace and Porcu remaining firmly in attendance. The fastest-lap figures reflected the closeness of their pace: gilvil77's 1:21.171 was only a little over a tenth quicker than Porcu's best.

The decisive change came on lap 19, when Porcu moved ahead of gilvil77. It was a gain of rather more consequence than a single place, for the man in front thereafter had the opportunity to dictate the race rather than answer it.

gilvil77 loses ground

The contest did not immediately cease to matter when Porcu took the advantage. gilvil77 remained second as the race moved into its middle stages, but an incident on lap 26 cost him six places, dropping him from second to eighth. That left Porcu clear of the opponent who had most directly tested him in the first half.

Porcu completed all 44 laps to take the flag as winner, while FMG came home second. It was a measured result for the British driver, whose place on the podium became increasingly important once the earlier struggle at the head of the field had been broken. gilvil77 was ultimately classified sixth after 43 laps, an outcome at odds with the speed he had shown in the opening exchanges.

Masse's long climb

Florian Masse supplied the other substantial movement of the afternoon. After two laps the Frenchman was down in 12th place, but he worked his way back into the contest with a recovery that would carry him to third at the finish.

His progress was far from a quiet ascent. In the middle portion of the race Masse and Nat Stevenson exchanged positions several times, with Masse ahead at the end of lap 11, Stevenson back in front a lap later, and Masse reclaiming the place before half-distance. Their contest formed part of a shifting group in which there was little permanence to any advantage.

Masse's persistence brought him to the flag in third, completing a nine-place recovery from his lowest recorded position. Stevenson, whose race included an incident that dropped him from seventh to ninth on lap 18, was classified 12th after 19 laps. Masse, by contrast, had turned a poor early situation into a result with considerable bearing on the Championship.

The table changes hands

The result gave Porcu 80 points after three rounds and the Championship lead, displacing Jayden HW from the summit. Masse's third place has him second on 74, six points behind the new leader.

That is the immediate importance of Jarama. Porcu did not merely collect the race victory: he converted a sustained early confrontation into command of the Championship at its halfway point. Masse's recovery kept the Frenchman close enough to ensure that the next race will begin with the leader under no illusion that his position is secure.
