Adamike99 Makes His Mark at Spa
Adamike99 took command after the opening laps to win the Spa Championship race, securing both his first victory of the season and the first recorded THR race win of his career. Linus Jonsson and pitman provided a close contest for the remaining podium places.
The decisive fifth lap
Spa produced a race of shifting groups and occasional disorder, but its central fact was the emergence of Adamike99 in the Ligier JS35B. Linus Jonsson led the early running in the Lambo 291, only for Adamike99 to move ahead by the end of lap five. From then onward the Ligier was the fixed point of the afternoon.
Adamike99 was credited as leader through 29 of the 33 laps, a measure not merely of pace but of the calm with which he converted the early advantage. There was no need for theatrical flourishes. Once clear of Jonsson, he kept the race in his keeping while the battles behind altered their shape repeatedly. After 33 laps he reached the flag as winner, ahead of Jonsson and the McLaren MP4/6 of pitman.
It was Adamike99's first success in this Championship, and rather more than that: the first recorded THR race victory of his career. Such first wins are seldom remembered for their margin. They are remembered for the moment when a driver ceases to be a promising presence in the field and becomes, unmistakably, a winner.
Jonsson holds off pitman
The struggle for second was the race's most sustained contest among the leaders. Jonsson and pitman exchanged the advantage more than once, the German McLaren driver getting ahead by the end of lap seven after Jonsson had been displaced in an incident which dropped him from second to fifth. Jonsson's recovery was measured rather than hurried, and he remained in the argument throughout.
By lap 22 pitman had again taken second, only for Jonsson to reclaim the place in the closing phase, moving back ahead by the end of lap 27. Their confrontation had been particularly close from laps 22 to 26, and its resolution gave the final podium its shape. Jonsson came home second and also recorded the fastest lap, a 1:47.562. Pitman finished third, 2.503 seconds behind the Lambo.
The result was a useful one for both men, but especially for Jonsson, whose early loss might readily have condemned him to a more anonymous afternoon. Instead, he restored himself to the podium and made pitman work for every prospect of second place.
Potatohedron's long climb
Behind the podium, Potatohedron supplied the most conspicuous recovery. The other Ligier driver was running only 18th after lap two, an unpromising beginning in a field of 23. Yet he climbed steadily through the traffic to finish sixth, a gain of 12 places from his lowest recorded position.
That advance brought Potatohedron into the company of Technoluddite and Tyler Van Beek, whose Minardi M191s had their own changing contest. Technoluddite moved ahead early, Tyler recovered the advantage by the end of lap 20, and the British driver's Minardi was back in front by lap 30. They eventually finished fifth and seventh respectively, with Potatohedron between them in sixth.
There was enough movement in this portion of the field to prevent the race settling into a simple procession. Technoluddite's fifth place was earned amid constant attention from Tyler, while Potatohedron's recovery showed that an early position need not be a final verdict at Spa.
A race with several currents
Elsewhere, gilvil77 brought the Ferrari 643 home fourth after an earlier contest with Florian Masse. Masse had moved ahead of the Ferrari by the end of lap 13, but gilvil77 reclaimed the advantage two laps later. Masse briefly returned in front by lap 19 before the Ferrari again moved ahead by lap 25. Gilvil77 went on to complete the full distance in fourth; Masse was classified 18th after completing 25 laps.
The official record also carried two penalties from Race Control. Pete Bondurant received four penalty points for causing a pile-up, while Tom Zeeuw received two for optimistic overtaking. Both were classified after 32 laps, Bondurant in 12th and Zeeuw in 10th.
Those details belonged to a race which had no single character behind its winner. There were recoveries, reversals and disputes over positions, yet Adamike99's Ligier remained above the changing patterns. That was the distinction which mattered.
Spa will chiefly stand as the day Adamike99 entered the THR winners' record. Jonsson's speed and pitman's resistance ensured that the podium was not granted without a contest, while the recoveries behind them suggested that the remaining four rounds still held ample room for fresh turns of fortune.
