Sirén Seizes the Initiative at Bikernieki

Kasperi Sirén took his first Championship victory in the Lotus Elan after assuming command on the third lap, while meisterJaeger and Dingo completed a measured but varied podium in the second race at Bikernieki - High Speed Ring.

The lead changes hands

There was little waste in Kasperi Sirén's evening at Bikernieki - High Speed Ring. MeisterJaeger held the earlier advantage, but Sirén moved his Lotus Elan 26R ahead by the end of lap three and thereafter made the race his own. He was credited as leader for 38 of the 40 laps, an indication not of procession but of a driver who had settled the principal question early and then refused to offer it back.

MeisterJaeger kept the second Elan firmly in the argument through the opening phase, yet Sirén's advantage proved durable. Behind them, Dingo brought the Porsche 904/4 GTS home third, giving the podium an appropriate contrast between the light, agile Lotus pair and the Stuttgart machine. Nat Stevenson was fourth in another Elan, while Teceka TCK's Ferrari 250 GT SWB 'SEFAC Hotrod' made a notable climb to fifth.

Sirén completed all 40 laps to take his first win in the Championship. It was a result with immediate consequence as well as local satisfaction: he leaves Bikernieki - High Speed Ring sharing the Championship lead with Adam Celárek, both on 40 points. Celárek, winner of the preceding Championship race, completed the distance in tenth place in his Chevrolet Corvette.

A Ferrari returns to the front

The most striking recovery belonged to Teceka TCK. The French driver was running only thirteenth after the second lap, but the Ferrari gradually re-emerged from the early disorder and worked into the leading group. By the end, fifth place represented an eight-position improvement from that low point and placed the big front-engined car ahead of Romain Pichon's Sunbeam Tiger MkII and Valentin Knechtel's Porsche.

That climb gave the upper order much of its changing character after Sirén had established himself. Teceka did not merely inherit a place in the first five, but advanced from the crowded early running into a result which will give the Ferrari contingent encouragement for the races to come.

Dingo's third place was equally important in a different fashion. The Finn could not prevent the two Elans from occupying the first two positions, but the Porsche remained the car which broke their monopoly on the rostrum. In a field containing machinery as diverse as Lotus Elans, Porsches, Ferraris, Sunbeam Tigers and Corvettes, Sirén's victory was emphatic without making the race a one-marque affair.

Stevenson and Pichon trade places

Further back in the leading ten, Stevenson and Pichon supplied a sustained contest whose order altered several times. Stevenson lost a place during a troubled second lap which included incidents at Pie Ozola and Elkonis, and Pichon was ahead by the end of lap six. The British driver reclaimed the advantage two laps later, but there was no permanence in it: before the final quarter Pichon had again moved in front.

Stevenson answered before lap 24 was complete and held fourth at the end, with Pichon sixth. Their contest had remained close for a substantial early stretch, the two cars frequently separated by less than two seconds. It was a useful reminder that, beyond Sirén's increasingly settled lead, the race still required careful judgement in traffic and gave no easy route through the order.

Knechtel's seventh-placed Porsche, Willphaizer's Mercedes-Benz 300SL in eighth and SDH-M ~ HappyKojot's Porsche in ninth completed a varied top ten. All three covered the full 40 laps, as did the drivers ahead of them.

The fight beyond the points leaders

The most persistent private dispute was between Jessie Lamure and Potatohedron. Their Corvette and Lotus came together as rivals rather than companions through the latter part of the race, spending the final 18 laps of their contest within two seconds of one another at repeated stages. Potatohedron was ahead at the end of lap 10, Lamure recovered the place by lap 34, and the order changed twice again in the closing sequence.

Lamure ultimately completed the distance eleventh in the Corvette, one place ahead of Potatohedron's Elan. Neither had troubled the podium battle, but their duel lent the final third of the race a proper racing texture, rather than the familiar drift towards a static classification.

It was this blend that defined the evening: Sirén's control at the front, the Ferrari's recovery, and smaller contests that continued to rearrange the field long after the lead had been decided.

For Sirén, the value of the result lies in more than a first Championship win. He has converted an early opportunity into a share of the lead and put the Lotus Elan at the centre of a season still young enough to offer many answers. Bikernieki - High Speed Ring gave him the initiative; the task now is to retain it.
